Beetle Bailey Board Game

BB Game

One of the first Beetle Bailey merchandising products, other than comic books, was a game made by the Jaymar Specialty Company of New York in the mid-1950s (there is no specific date on the box or the board). All of the artwork for this game was drawn by Mort Walker.

The game board, shown below, features some hilarious action scenes, particularly ones with Killer chasing girls. All of the characters in the cast at that time were included.GameBoardComp1b

Beetle Bailey Comic Books

5.1.53 Beetle comic page

The first Beetle Bailey comic book, Dell #469 shown above, was published on May 1, 1953. At that time it was part of the Dell Four Color Comics series, which ran alternating titles. Mort Walker drew all of the cover and interior pages (example on the right).

The next two Beetle Bailey comics, Dell #521, dated December 1, 1953 and Dell #552 dated April 1, 1954, are shown below.  Beetle Bailey got his own comic book series with Dell beginning in 1956. – Brian Walker

A decade after his first appearance, Otto was still very much a conventional cartoon dog, walking on all fours and biting Beetle, as the strip above demonstrates.

That changed in 1969 when Sarge decided to have his dog work in the office as an assistant. The strip below was the first time Otto appeared in a uniform.
