This Sunday page utilizes an old comic device – the exploding cigar. Often meant as a practical joke, these novelty items were usually harmless. A small quantity of explosive chemicals was placed in the tip, which ignited when the cigar was lit.

John D. Cosmo first appeared in Beetle Bailey in 1955. He was the camp capitalist who ran his own store, “Cosmo’s Korner,” where he sold soda, cigarettes, greeting cards, music, magazines, and used equipment as well as services like dating advice, loans, letter writing and shoe shines. His role was similar to the one played by Milo Minderbender in Joseph Heller’s classic novel Catch-22, published in 1961. Cosmo was also a pool hustler and a card shark.

In this classic Sunday page, Beetle delivers a message the old fashioned way – by hand. As the low man on the totem pole at Camp Swampy he frequently has to be a go-between for the higher-ups. He rarely gets any respect even when he does his job beyond the call of duty.
