Sarge, with his boisterous and exuberant personality, is the kind of guy who gets vocal in the shower.  But what would he sing?

We have done gags that have him belting out patriotic songs and marching tunes.  I thought it might funny for him to rhapsodize about one of his favorite foods.

It was a big fad back in the late 1990s. Beanie Babies were plush animals filled with plastic pellets.  The nine original characters introduced by Ty Inc. in 1993 were Legs the Frog, Squealer the Pig, Spot the Dog, Flash the Orca, Splash the Whale, Chocolate the Moose, Patti the Platypus, Brownie the Bear and Pinchers the Lobster.They didn’t sell well at first, but Ty released each generation in limited quantities that were retired before the next generation came out. In 1996, tags were added that identified their date of birth with a four-line poem about the character.

In this Sunday page, Miss Buxley is encouraging Beetle to apply to Officer’s school. He responds with a speech about the important role that privates have played throughout history.

Private is the lowest rank in the U.S. Army. There are two levels.  The PV1, sometimes know as a “recruit” wears no uniform rank insignia.  A PV2 has a single chevron.  Advancement to PV2 is usually automatic after six months of service. Even though Beetle has been in the army for over sixty years, he doesn’t have a chevron, so he’s probably a PV1.
