In this Sunday page, Miss Buxley is encouraging Beetle to apply to Officer’s school. He responds with a speech about the important role that privates have played throughout history.

Private is the lowest rank in the U.S. Army. There are two levels.  The PV1, sometimes know as a “recruit” wears no uniform rank insignia.  A PV2 has a single chevron.  Advancement to PV2 is usually automatic after six months of service. Even though Beetle has been in the army for over sixty years, he doesn’t have a chevron, so he’s probably a PV1.

Miss Buxley was first introduced in the strip on November 17, 1971 as a temporary replacement for Miss Blips.

Since then, the two secretaries have become close friends and co-conspirators in General Halftrack’s office.  They have very different personalities, but both frequently complain about their boss.  Blips, who is not quite as attractive as Miss Buxley, likes to hear about her romantic adventures.  She also complains that she does more than her share of the work.

Miss Buxley is General Halftrack’s secretary. She was first introduced in Beetle Bailey on November 17, 1971.

Mort Walker claimed that he had no intention of making her a regular character but discovered that readers liked her. He started using her more and more and eventually she was featured one day a week.
