This is the final installment in the “Sarge Dreams” series but certainly not the last time this theme will be revisited in the strip. It was inspired by some trashy horror and science fiction movies of the 1950s and 60s.

Next week we will be featuring a classic sequence from 2003 in which Sarge and Otto visit Beetle’s family for the holidays. So stay tooned.

Over the course of the last four decades, Sarge continued to have nighttime fantasies, often induced by overeating, but by the early 1970s, these episodes became less regular. Mort felt that he had milked this formula for every idea he could think of. With a strip that has been around as long as Beetle Bailey – 66 years and counting – there is always the opportunity to revisit classic themes.

We are coming to the end of the “Sarge Dreams” series. This later entry revisits the original gag formula of a pizza-induced fantasy.

The “fat watchers” coming to the rescue in panel #7 is a reference to Weight Watchers, an organization that was founded in 1963 and marketed products and services to people who were trying to shed pounds. It continues to operate in about thirty countries around the world.
