In 1964, Mort Walker and Jerry Dumas came up with a new character dimension for Sergeant Snorkel. Readers were now able to share his vivid dreams and fantasies.

In the Sunday page above he transforms into “Sarge!” a superhero with abilities far beyond the powers of mortal men. In the end, it turns out Sarge is just having a dream triggered by the comic books and pizza he consumed before going to sleep.

A decade after his first appearance, Otto was still very much a conventional cartoon dog, walking on all fours and biting Beetle, as the strip above demonstrates.

That changed in 1969 when Sarge decided to have his dog work in the office as an assistant. The strip below was the first time Otto appeared in a uniform.

In this vintage Sunday page from 1959, Sarge’s dog Otto has a starring role. Mort Walker loves to feature visual humor in Beetle Bailey and Otto’s determined car chasing provides some great action scenes. Otto was still wearing a basic dog shirt with sergeant stripes at this point in his development.
