In 1967, Dr. Bonkus the camp psychiatrist, debuted in Beetle Bailey. He was short in stature with a bald head and an unruly moustache.

As Mort Walker explained in The Best of Beetle Bailey, “Every camp has a psychiatrist and no camp needs one more than Camp Swampy. Of course they got the psychiatrist they deserved, Dr. Bonkus, who could use a little help himself.”

Timeline – 1971 Part 4

Although it is not currently baseball season, this gag is adaptable to any team sport. Sarge could just as easily be giving a pep talk to the football team.

This Sunday page was inspired by the famous “win one for the Gipper” speech. George Gipp was an all-American halfback, quarterback and kicker for Notre Dame from 1917 to 1920. He died of a throat infection days after leading his team to a victory over Northwestern in his senior season.

From 1964 to 1974 Sergeant Snorkel had seventeen fantastic dreams that were featured in a series of Sunday pages. Most of these episodes involved Sarge falling asleep after eating too much pizza and having fantasies about being a superhero, playing professional sports, traveling back in time or other similar scenarios.
